Comments:
The missing note in the final phrase of this melody results from a hole in the manuscript. Cuesta's edition of this melody (attributed to Peire Vidal) does not include this obscured note- he instead redistributes the text underlay beginning with the C of the next staff system for "al" of "alques," shifting each syllable by one note or note group for the remainder of that line. (Cuesta 359) Van der Werf suggests a ternaria CBA because of the placement of the hole (he calls its a "stain," which would only obscure notes within that pitch range. (VWE Extant, 350) In Phrase 5, the sixth neume appears to indicate an ascending plica because of the upward stem, and I have included it here; however, it does not appear in VWE.
